Israeli-American Is Co-Laureate Of Nobel Prize In Chemistry
Professor Arieh Warshel, an Israeli-American chemist is one of three winners of the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Warshel won the prize with fellow scientists Martin Karplus and Michael Levitt, who are also Jewish (Levitt also holds an Israeli citizenship). The three won the prize for their work on multiscale models for complex systems.

October 9, 2013 | Professor Amir Sagi from Ben Gurion University, who invented a novel biotechnology application to produce all male populations of the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii through temporal RNA interference, is the winner of the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) inaugural Novus Global Aquaculture Innovation Award. Sagi is the former Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, incumbent of the Lily and Sidney Oelbaum Chair for Applied Biochemistry and a member of the Department of Life Sciences and the National Institute of Biotechnology in the Negev (NIBN).

October 7, 2013 | Israeli company Brainsway, which develops non-invasive treatments using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), has raised NIS 24 million (approx. $6.8 million) on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE). The company received an additional $1 million from a Japanese distributer over the weekend.

Quixey Raises $50M From Alibaba Group
October 7, 2013 | Israeli startup Quixey, which developed an app serach engine, has announced the closing of a successful Series C financing round, raising $50 million. The round was led by Alibaba Group, which is the owner and operator of the world’s largest Chinese ecommerce website.

Apple Acquires Cue For $40M
October 7, 2013 | Israeli startup Cue, which developed a personal-assistant app, has been acquired by international technology giant Apple. Several sources estimate that the price tag for Cue was between $40 million and $60 million. Cue was founded by Israeli “Whiz-Kid” Daniel Gross, who at the age of 19, was accepted to the prestigious Y Combinator program.
