Haifa-based startup Pluri has received patent approval for its 3D bioreactor – a specialist tank that mimics the environment cells to reproduce – which it is using to cultivate multitudes of plant cells at a time.
The startup is working on cultivating coffee from plant cells by placing them in a bioreactor, aiming to use less water and land while still keeping the same effect and taste of the drink.
It also hopes to use the new technology to expand to cultivating plants used in medication.
“This key patent not only solidifies our leadership in cell expansion technology but also aligns with our strategic vision to scale the production of cell-based products industrially, potentially opening a broad spectrum of market opportunities,” said Pluri president and CEO Yaky Yanay.
“PluriAgtech’s patented technology can be used for a wide range of plant cell products like food and beverages, medicine, ingredients and more. We see many opportunities in the agritech space, where Pluri is on the forefront of providing sustainable solutions for humanity’s greatest challenges both through our own proprietary products and in conjunction with potential partners,” he said.
