The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa has opened its newest campus, to advance the school’s research into composite materials.
“Composite materials, which will be at the heart of the new center’s activities, are truly revolutionary materials in a variety of fields, including aviation, green energy production and storage, interfaces with the human body, construction, and civil engineering,” said the institute in a statement.
The Sagol Center will house researchers, students, engineers and technicians dedicated to the development and production of state-of-the-art composite materials, such as graphene and protein-based compounds.
“The establishment of the new Center will enable the Technion’s researchers to develop better materials in terms of their strength, weight, cost, and durability. These materials will be of great use to all of humanity… [and] are used for an increasing number of applications, ranging from defense systems and space engineering to sports equipment,” said Prof. Gitti Frey, Dean of the Technion’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, at a special ceremony this week.
The center was the result of a donation by former Keter Plastic CEO and Technion alumnus Sami Sagol and his wife, Tova.
The Sagols have funded various medical and academic centers in Israel, including at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot; Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, near Tel Aviv; and Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan.
