Israeli Architects Create Tiny Artist Studio That Doubles As Living Space

A pair of ingenious Israeli architects have created the perfect solution for urban artists on a modest budget: A tiny art studio that can also double as a living space.

Raanan Stern and Shany Tal designed a sleek 18 square-meter living space that is full of multi-functional items, like drawers that turn into a bed.

The Tel Aviv studio can unfold to reveal two desks, 36 drawers, modular storage compartments and pegboard display walls.

The space was created inside the apartment of a Tel Aviv-based artist as a working space, guest room and to display a collection of family objects dating from the 1940s to the present day.

The apartment is located inside a concrete block from the 1950s and two of the room’s four walls are windows, so expanding the space was not an option, the architects explain.

Most of the cells, cupboards and drawers (some of which open to reveal colorful mosaics) have been constructed from lightweight birch and treated with a clear coating that emphasizes the wood’s natural grain. Birch was used for the floor.
