Eco Wave Power, an Israeli company that uses waves to create energy, has started supplying the Israel Electric Corporation with electricity generated at its power station in the Port of Jaffa.
The EWP-EDP One power station was officially connected to the national grid in August 2023. The station was jointly funded by EDF Renewables IL, a Herzliya-based solar power company that has a 50 percent share in the project, and Israel’s Ministry of Energy.
The company’s system transfers the motion of ocean waves to power stations on land using its uniquely shaped floating devices, which rise and fall with the waves’ up-and-down motion and the changes in water levels. The power stations convert the energy into fluid pressure used to spin a generator, producing electricity.
The power station has a capacity of 100 KW and consists of 10 floaters placed along the breakwater in Jaffa Port. Each of the floaters connects to Eco Wave Power’s land-based energy conversion unit.
The company is currently testing the durability and operations equipment of the power plant, especially during storms. A recent storm with waves of up to 3.5 meters proved the durability of the technology when the mechanism continued to work without sustaining any damage.
The plant has also shown it can reach its maximum energy production without issue.
“These results are encouraging for the first phase of testing, and we are expecting to see a significant increase in production by the end of the testing phase,” said the Eco Wave team.
