Israel’s Ministry of Defense has begun test flights for its new surveillance aircraft, which it claims is the “world’s most advanced aircraft of its kind.”
The ORON aircraft is equipped with cutting-edge sensors that will provide the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) with unprecedented intelligence capabilities, including the real time monitoring of ground movements and tracking of multiple targets under difficult weather and poor visibility conditions.
The aircraft also uses AI to enable efficient and automated data processing that will provide intelligence in real time and enhance the efficacy of IDF operational activities.
The ORON was jointly developed by the Defense Ministry’s R&D branch, Israel Aerospace Industry’s Elta subsidiary, and the Israel Air Force, IDF Intelligence Corps and the Navy.
Once operational, the aircraft will serve with Nachson, the 122nd squadron of the Israel Air Force that carries out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
“ORON is a joint multi-domain, multi-sensor solution which will provide the IDF with game-changing capabilities to counter threats far and near,” said Lt. Col. Yoed, head of the Defense Ministry’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development Missionized Aircraft Branch.
“The aircraft’s systems incorporate unique technological expertise that has been accumulated over the years within the industry and Ministry of Defense,” he said.
“This accumulation of knowledge enables effective preparation for future threats in all of Israel’s operational arenas.”
