Getting your morning coffee fix on-the-go will soon be much sweeter and easier, Israeli food tech company TopGum claims, thanks to their new product that delivers a caffeine hit in gummy form.
The Rehovot-based company says it is for the first time using its own new and unique microencapsulation technology (the process of concentrating a compound within a certain material) to “enhance flavor and boost absorption” in the high-dosage coffee gummies, known as Gummiccino.
The gummies will soon be widely available worldwide, TopGum hopes, thanks to the new microencapsulation facility it is planning to build in Israel.
“This innovative technology allows consumers to savor the flavor and aroma of coffee-on-the-go, while energizing themselves with a single chewy treat,” says Eli Edri, TopGum COO and VP of strategic partnerships.
A serving of two gummies delivers 40 mg of caffeine – the equivalent of a standard shot of espresso coffee – and the new technology behind the product, known as TopCaps, makes it easier for the body to absorb the stimulant by breaking it down in your stomach and not your mouth.
To give them that authentic coffee taste, smell and feeling, TopGum says, the gummies are infused with an extract of coffee beans, while the new technology ensures that there is none of the bitter taste that has previously made coffee gummies less than appealing.
“Thanks to our novel TopCaps technology, busy coffee lovers can finally experience the rich flavor of coffee in gummy form, with zero bitterness,” says TopGum CEO Amichai Bar-Nir.
The gummies are even shaped like the capsules that coffee lovers use in their own barista machines at home. The product comes in three standard flavors of the beloved beverage – espresso, cappuccino, and mocha – but TopGum says its clients can customize the gummies themselves, changing the taste, the dose of caffeine and even the appearance of the gummies.
TopGum says that gummies are increasingly popular as a delivery system for nutritional boosts such as vitamins, with market research showing the number of gummy supplement launches worldwide increased by 54 percent between 2017 and 2022.
Coffee, meanwhile, is a long-standing global favorite, with 74 percent of Americans reportedly having at least one cup a day and Europeans consuming a staggering 273 million kgs of the stuff between June 2021 and June 2022.
