Two health institutions in the United States have added an Israeli wearable device to their roster of treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder.
The FDA-approved Prism device – an electrodes-laden cap that fits snugly over the head – was developed by GrayMatters Health, a Haifa-based company that develops digital training therapies to help the brain regulate mental health care.
Home Base, the largest private US clinic of its kind treating veterans and service members, is adding Prism to its existing PTSD programs at the National Center of Excellence in Charlestown, Massachusetts, while New York-based Fermata interventional psychiatry practice is offering the device to help its patients manage symptoms of PTSD.
Prism shows a patient’s brain activity in the amygdala, the small region of the brain associated with emotions and memory, while being exposed to different scenarios.
This helps patients with PTSD control their symptoms by better understanding what triggers that heightened activity in that part of the brain.
“Home Base is excited to test promising new treatments, like Prism, which aim to establish gold standard PTSD treatments for Veterans, Service Members, their Families and Families of the Fallen,” said Home Base Executive Director Brig. Gen. (ret.) Jack Hammond.
“Providing innovative and cutting-edge options like Prism allows us to ensure our Nation’s Heroes have access to the best mental health care treatments they have earned and deserve at no out-of-pocket cost to them.”
GrayMatters says it is working with additional American clinics as part of plans to expand further in the US in the coming months.
