Eight Israel-based researchers are among 100 new members worldwide in the prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) for leading members of the life sciences community.
The organization says the new members and another 20 new associate members are being recognized for accomplishments across the spectrum of life science research, including work on infectious diseases, ocean nutrient cycles, plant survival in desert environments, and the connection between our brains and our emotions.
EMBO’s past and present members include 92 Nobel Prize laureates. The new members are part of a four-year program that offers financial support, mentorship from other EMBO researchers and use of the EMBO lab in Germany.
The eight Israeli honorees are Prof. Asaph Aharoni, Prof. Ariel Amir, Prof. Nir S. Gov and Prof. Karina Yaniv of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot; Prof. Oded Béjà, Prof. Benjamin Podbilewicz and Prof. Asya Rolls of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa; and Prof. Inbal Goshen of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
“Prof. Goshen’s work on memory processes and neuron-glia interactions continues to push the boundaries of our understanding of brain function. Her election to EMBO underscores the global impact of her research and reflects the high standards of scientific excellence at Hebrew University,” said Hebrew University Rector Prof. Tamir Sheafer.
