An Israeli foodtech startup has created a prototype herb-infused chocolate bar that can support healthy blood sugar levels.
SOLVEAT’s chocolate bar contains its botanical formula, which includes eight different herbs, among them golden thread (Coptis chinensis), Chinese foxglove (Rehmannia glutinosa) and Hawthorn Berries (Crataegus pinnatifida).
The prototype bar, created in collaboration with Israeli chocolatier Ornat, is a proof of concept to demonstrate the feasibility of SOLVEAT’s herbal blend.
In a preliminary study, the company found that the chocolate reduced blood sugar by 10 to 24 percent in 10 out of 12 participants with prediabetes (when blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to signify type 2 diabetes).
Higher doses of the entire formula did not yield any further enhancements in the results. Additionally, the positive effects were not demonstrated when only a partial composition of the herbal blend was used.
A full clinical trial of the herbal formula is currently taking place.
The prototype bar will be introduced at Food Ingredients Europe, an annual exhibit where food and beverage ingredients professionals showcase their latest products.
“Our botanical formula takes inspiration from the wisdom of various schools of traditional herbal medicines emanating from the East and West,” said Tal Naveh, SOLVEAT co-founder and director of herbal medicine.
“We merge them into one all-encompassing bio active composition that is supported by modern science,” he said.
“The botanical extracts in our solution work synergistically to balance blood sugar levels through supporting various organs in the body and that’s why each is essential to the efficacy of the formula.”
