A MedTech company that developed an innovative AI approach to stroke prevention has been named rising startup of the year in a competition at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The Asper Prize is a competition to recognize startups using innovative technology in order to create a global positive impact. It comes with an award of 100,000 shekels (approx. $28,000).
The award is presented by ASPER-HUJI Innovate, the Hebrew University’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, and the Asper Foundation.
Avertto focuses on early stroke detection through an AI-based wearable called StrokeAlert. The device consists of two noninvasive patches and a wearable control unit, which sends an automated alert to the wearer if an abnormal change in blood flow is detected.
This allows people with silent strokes (which don’t cause any initial external symptoms) to reach the hospital before further damage is unknowingly caused.
The judges panel comprised investors from leading Israeli VC firms such as OurCrowd and Bridges Israel. They selected the finalists based on the innovative qualities of the technology and large-scale positive impact.
The 45 startups who entered the competition were whittled down to a final five: Avertto; Quai.MD, an AI-based company that assists healthcare providers in complex diagnoses; RumaFeed, a food tech startup which eliminates toxic chemicals in potatoes; Anina Culinary Art, whose mission is to transform “ugly vegetables” that are typically discarded into nutritious meals; and Daika Wood, which creates unique wood material out of recycled wood waste.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to the remarkable team at Avertto whose hard work, talent, and shared vision have made this achievement possible,” the startup said in response to the award.
“We are incredibly excited about the future possibilities and remain committed to achieving our mission and preventing disabilities.”
Gail Asper, chair of the Asper Foundation, praised all the entrants for their efforts to make the world a better place.
“Thank you to the startup companies that competed for the 2023 Asper Prize. We believe that the future of creating a positive impact on society and the environment and for improving humanity lies in innovative technologies created by innovative entrepreneurs. We are pleased to continue supporting startups, demonstrating our appreciation of novel technologies that benefit the public good,” she said.
