Luxury car maker Porsche has teamed up with Israeli tech company Mobileye to implement its autonomous driving tech in its new models.
Mobileye’s SuperVision system includes 11 cameras and radar-based sensing that allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel on certain roads, enabling the car to follow navigation routes pre-chosen by the driver, change lanes, and even overtake slower vehicles that are ahead.
The system also includes maps that have up-to-date and local information on road features such as lanes and signals.
Porsche did not say when customers would see Mobileye’s technology appear on future models, nor which models would include the SuperVision system.
“We are excited to collaborate with Porsche on bringing the next generation of driving technology to customers worldwide,” said Prof. Amnon Shashua, CEO of Mobileye.
“Mobileye SuperVision system was designed to enhance safety through the synergetic interaction of driver and vehicle, as well as enhance the driving experience itself, by giving drivers greater freedom to choose how they want to engage with the road, and when they want to let the vehicle handle basic driving tasks.”
Shashua founded Mobileye in 1999, together with Ziv Amram. In 2017, US semiconductor giant Intel bought the startup for $15.3 billion. To date, more than 135 million vehicles globally have been built with Mobileye assist technology.
