An Israeli startup has been recognized in Dubai for its pioneering work developing hydrogen as a clean energy source.
GenCell Energy, which produces the clean gas from liquid ammonia, was named Rising Star in the Hydrogen Field by judges at this year’s Connecting Green Hydrogen MENA (Middle East and North Africa) conference.
It was singled out for its “extraordinary vision, innovative spirit and pioneering efforts in promoting the field of hydrogen energy, which contribute to a sustainable future”.
The conference, held for the fifth year, marks the transition of oil and gas companies from the Middle East towards renewable energies, with an emphasis on hydrogen. Key participating companies included oil and gas giants Shell, ExxonMobil, and BP.
The conference’s Hydrogen Future Awards recognizes the achievements of companies in the sector.
GenCell produces clean hydrogen gas from liquid ammonia using a catalyst to separate the nitrogen from the hydrogen. While the nitrogen is emitted, the hydrogen comes into contact with an electrolyte containing oxygen.
They form water, and electrons are released to create electricity. Hydrogen fuel is not used widely because the cheapest method of producing it – which involves heating natural gas with steam – creates lots of carbon dioxide.
There’s also virtually no pure hydrogen on Earth because it’s so reactive – which is another reason fossil fuels are burned in order to create it.
“We are excited to lead innovation in the field of renewable energy and are excited to receive this prestigious award and recognition at this important event in the hydrogen industry, which brings together the largest energy giants in the Middle East,” said Rami Reshef, CEO of GenCell.
“We commend these entities for leading the transition of traditional oil and gas companies towards renewable energy, and GenCell is working to contribute to the development of the hydrogen economy in the region through collaborations based on the company’s applications in the fields of off-grid and backup energy production and hydrogen and ammonia-based electric vehicle charging.”
