SodaStream says its customers prevented five billion single-use plastic bottles from being used last year.
The company, which turns tap water into carbonated soft drinks, also said it decreased the plastic waste in its manufacturing processes by more than 20 percent in 2022, and saved 11 tons of plastic by reusing plastic bags in its production lines.
SodaSteam, founded in Israel and bought by Pepsico in 2018, uses pressurized cylinders to add carbon dioxide to water and create soda at home, thereby dispensing with single-use bottles.
“SodaStream’s vision is to change the way the world drinks by inspiring to push for better, and empowering people to make better choices not only for themselves, but for the planet,” said CEO Eyal Shohat.
“One SodaStream saves up to thousands of single-use plastic bottles, and thanks to our dedicated consumers around the world, we managed to save more than 5 billion single-use plastic bottles in the last year.”
Starting last year, up to 25 percent of plastic parts used in its new sparkling water makers were produced from recycled materials.
The packages from its sparkling water makers are also fully recyclable, made from recyclable cardboard and plastic bags.
As of 2023, SodaStream’s factories in Germany, Australia, and the Netherlands are fully operated using renewable energy sources.
The company’s factory in Israel now gets 15 percent of its electricity from solar panels that cover more than three quarters of its rooftop.
In addition, 8.3 percent of the factory’s yearly water consumption will be saved by reusing water from the factory’s cooling water system.
