The Sharing Memories project is to highlight testimonies of Holocaust survivors with a series of Instagram posts to mark Yom HaShoah (on Tuesday, April 18th).
Artists, content creators and online influencers will upload stories told by some of Israel’s 150,000-plus Holocaust survivors, almost all aged over 80.
The project targets a younger generation through social media. It also aims to raise funds for survivors living below the poverty line.
Sharing Memories, now in its third year, is a joint venture by Meta – owners of Facebook and Instagram – and Latet, the largest non-profit combating poverty and food insecurity in Israel.
“Many young people do not know any survivors personally and have not heard their heroic stories firsthand,” said the organization.
“As the years go by, young people find it increasingly difficult to connect with the traditional means of commemoration.
“As a result, there is genuine concern that they will fail to grasp the enormity of the Holocaust and its tremendous effect on the history of the Jewish people.”
This year the Hebrew Scouts Movement in Israel is partnering with the project so that members can meet and interview Holocaust survivors.
Sharing Memories says it hopes to connect young people and survivors to preserve the collective memory of the Holocaust.
They’re used to fast, accessible, and easy-to-absorb content, rather than listening to full-length testimonies.
