An Israeli startup that has built an AI to help developers test their code has just emerged from stealth with $11 million.
CodiumAI allows developers to insert their code, click the ‘generate tests’ button, and its program will automatically analyze the code and create a variety of tests to check its logic.
Like ChatGPT, the AI is interactive, and developers can ask for more specific tests by typing additional instructions.
Instead of developers having to spend 25 to 50 percent of their time building tests to assess whether their code works, CodiumAI can carry out this task for them.
The $11 million funding was led by Vine Venture and TLV Partners, as well as investors from OpenAI, Snyk, and VMware.
In 2020, software of questionable quality cost US companies alone over $2 trillion. If an error in the code is not caught as soon as it is written, it takes longer to undo as it moves through the software development lifecycle, and the cost of addressing them increases.
“CodiumAI is addressing a real need in the market. There are already tools to check software vulnerabilities, other tools to test performance, and now even tools that help developers generate code,” said Brian Sack, an Investor at TLV Partners.
“But a solution for testing code logic is missing, and it is not a coincidence, as it is a very challenging task – it is almost like getting into the mind of the one who wrote the code. CodiumAI is a creative, targeted and focused use of generative AI and an application that provides value immediately.”
CodiumAI was founded by Itamar Friedman and Dedy Kredo, who both founded and exited startups, and led product and R&D teams. They started CodiumAI to address a chronic pain point they have dealt with throughout their careers: verifying and validating code.
