Eater Travel, the global food guide published by Eater, a food and dining network of sites owned by Vox Media, named the Israeli city of Akko (Acre in English) to its “Where To Eat in 2020” list, its first-ever round-up of top 19 food destinations.
Eater’s vast web of global culinary experts helped curate the list by finding the best places in their respective regions while Eater editors researched, collected local input, and referenced their own travel journals to come up with a group of cities that “celebrate the many magnificently diverse ways there are to eat in 2020.”
The guide includes 19 listicles — articles with numbered lists of the best food locations in each city — along with corresponding maps to essential restaurants, cafes, street stands, bars, coffee shops, and market stalls written by locals and made for travelers
“So, with this — your wanderlust playbook for the next 12 months — in hand, it’s time to cash in those miles and open wide. Your next trip, and your next meal, await,” Eater editors write in the guide.
Akko, the ancient Israeli port city “skirting the Mediterranean coast just over an hour northwest of Tel Aviv” is known for a food scene that “erupts on seemingly every corner.” Eater writer Keren Brown notes the cardamom-spiked coffee and the Yemenite hawaij, as well as the international variations of hummus, fresh seafood from surrounding seas, and sweet kanafeh pastries.
She gives special mention to the city’s strong influence of Jewish, Arab, Muslim, Christian, and Bahá’í cultures as well as famous “bearded chef” Uri Buri, who is a charming representation of the city he loves. He owns Uri Buri restaurant, a well-known fish and seafood eatery that was recently named to TripAdvisor’s list of Top 25 “Best Fine Dining Restaurants” in the world as part of the annual Travelers’ Choice Awards for 2019.
The writer goes into further detail about Akko in her feature called “The 16 Essential Restaurants of Akko, Israel.
Other cities on the list known for their diverse food scene include Marseille (France,), Lagos (Nigeria), and Pristina (Kosovo.)
