Israeli material science company Gauzy, and New York’s Research Frontiers announced this month the launch of a second production facility in Germany to produce SPD-Smart light control film, or smart window technology, for the entire SPD-SmartGlass industry including automotive and architectural applications.
Gauzy set up an initial production line in Tel Aviv late last year, after acquiring a license from Research Frontiers to develop, produce and sell products and components using its patented SPD-Smart light-control technology. The SPD-Smart light control film allows users to instantly, precisely and uniformly control the shading of glass or plastic products, either manually or automatically
Gauzy, founded in 2009, also developed a Liquid Crystal Glass (LCG) technology, combining high-tech and low-tech by embedding film technology into raw materials, like glass, to allow for control of various forms of light, where the surface can be switched from opaque to transparent on demand. The former is ideal for projection and privacy, while the latter invites the outside world in. Images and videos in HD quality can be projected onto the LCG, potentially turning any such surface into a projection platform.
Gauzy LCG is featured in a number of projects worldwide, including automotive collaborations, hotels, corporate offices, luxury residences, retail chains, and consumer electronics
“Our new manufacturing facility will be strategically located in Stuttgart, Germany near our key automotive customers,” said Eyal Peso, CEO of Gauzy, in a statement. “We have already completed five months of design work and have acquired the production site. We are investing millions of euros to build this state-of-the-art facility with specially-designed coating and curing areas that will give Gauzy the capacity to coat over one million square meters of SPD film per year.”
Joseph M. Harary, President of Research Frontiers noted: “Gauzy has consistently shown their ability through innovation and investment to bring the best quality products to the smart glass industry. Their new SPD film production line will have special in-line production capabilities that do not currently exist anywhere in our industry. These capabilities address beautifully the needs of our licensees and their customers in the automotive, train, aircraft, boat and architectural industries.”
Gauzy expects the new facility in Stuttgart, where it also has offices, to be in production within the next six months.
