July 9, 2018 | The Weizmann Institute of Science, a public research university in Rehovot, announced on Monday that it came in 9th place in the research quality category, according to the annual CWTS Leiden Ranking, based in Leiden University in the Netherlands, and compiled by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (or in Dutch: Centrum voor Wetenschap en Technologische Studies, CWTS). It was the only Israeli university to make the top 10 in that category for the years 2013-2016. The top spot went to Rockefeller University in New York, with MIT in second place, and Princeton University, Stanford University and Harvard University in 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively.
The Weizmann Institute of Science said in a statement that its “high place in a ranking that assesses research quality is evidence of the continual, significant improvement in the already excellent research of Institute scientists.”
The Leiden ranking includes nearly 1,000 of the top universities globally, listed according to bibliometric indicators such as published scientific research, citations, and research quality.
In the publication output indicator, Weizmann came in 464th, while Tel Aviv University ranked 76th and Hebrew University at 175.
