Roy Shapira is a brilliant game designer, dedicated to the point that you might call him a workaholic.

After single-handedly completing his award-winning Crysis mode “Combat Training”, which took him 9 month of work, he now leads an 18-members game-developing team in order to create “Petrograd” - a viable independent AAA game by 2009.

In this interview he shows concept pictures and videos, talks about the development process, demonstrates how game design works and gives some advice for novice game designers.

What he doesn’t talk though, is how in the world can you keep a day job, a wife and young kids, and still do a full time job as a developer in your free time. The nocamles team has a suspicion that it involves time travel but we can’t peove anything…

Today, Roy and his group released official in-game trailer.

Here some more information about the upcoming video game, Petrograd:

Petrograd: an action-thriller first person shooter. Enter the shoes of a Black-Ops Special Agent, investigating the disappearance of a full city’s population overnight. An eerie atmosphere and immersive environments are just the beginning, nothing is quite what it seems in this suspenseful experience set in post-USSR Eastern Europe.

Sounds nice, eh? Problem is, this vision is quite Utopian (like Ohad Barzilay’s Mytopia suggests. Many try to bring uniformity online, like OpenID for web identity or Trillian for IM clients. But Barzilay’s vision took him further. He wants to run a gaming system across multiple platforms, with combined stats, credits and rankings. You won’t care what system your game rival uses or what app he is plating from – just that he plays.

They are doing what every company dreams of: much more for much less money. Yaron, the founding CEO saw the potential of controlling games with gestures, several month before the Nintendo WII came to be.
He created his company in order to turn every webcam equipped computer into a physical playing machine. He confesses from his not-so-flashy office, that living his dreams is not an easy task. But even while he worked for a whole year without any staff or paycheck, he didn’t gave up. And this is what came of it.
