We’ve all been there at one point: The weekend has arrived, but we realize we’ve made no plans for a fun outing. So we call friends, but they aren’t up for soirees or they’re just out of ideas. Calendo is an iPhone app built for just that kind of unfortunate moment, by finding interesting events happening near you, sorted by location, interests and of course – your friends.

The app, currently exclusively available on the iPhone, is an event search engine that adapts itself to the user. Basically, the app surveys tens of thousands of public events on Facebook – even those that don’t show on your feed – and arranges the parties, concerts, screenings, fashion shows, sporting events or any other events according to your geographic location, interests, your friend list and more.
In addition, the app will help you find events at locations you plan on visiting. For instance, if you’re planning a trip to New York or Paris, Calendo says it can find those typically local events. The app also runs in the background, alerting you of events that are highly compatible with your preferences and even events to which many of your Facebook friends are going.
Relies more on friends than on preferences
When put to the test by the Newsgeek team on a weekday – the main events found were mainly house parties, political meetings and campaign launch parties. Towards the weekend, the app showed better matches, based mostly on events friends were going to.
When it came to finding relevant events, it seemed as if the app was relying more on the friend list than on interests. On the bright side, if an event is appealing, the app allows you to automatically add it to your iPhone’s calendar, to make sure we don’t forget it. However, when the Newsgeek crew tried deleting recommended events, the app crashed, so they recommend avoiding doing that for the time being.
The bottom line is that even though the testers were not great party goers, they could still find a number of events that were relevant to them, and also find interesting events that their friends were planning to attend – so for the avid party-goer, Calendo may prove to be a useful app. In addition, unlike competing apps, Calendo will still alert you of upcoming events, regardless of your friends’ activity.
