IntuNET: New Internet Browser For The Elderly
In order to help the elderly population embrace the internet, and ease their learning curve that we all go through with each new technology, Intutula, an Israeli startup, has developed IntuNet, a specialized web browser that answers the needs of this age group. IntuNET, which looks different to what we are used to seeing in common browsers, is better suited for the pace and needs of the population, the company says.
The idea of an accessible interface for this population could help people who have been intimidated by the idea of an encounter with the information highway. One of the advantages of creating an interface designated for a specific population is the ability to fit its needs. This includes, for example, larger navigation buttons, simplified menus and different colors or graphics better adapted to vision impairment.
The browser can be downloaded from the company’s website and be tested by users before being installed. Installing the browser takes a few minutes and makes sure that the computer has all necessary requirements for the operation. In the event of an absence of any component, it will be downloaded from the internet.
After installing the browser, it opens up in a new window. From there, the user can start surfing online. One of the key difference with intuNET is that it reads information out loud when the mouse is hovered over different part of the menu. That way users receive the information in both audio and visual format.
The potential for an approachable browser for the elderly is only increasing with the rise of life expectancy around the world, the startup says. In an interview with Israeli website Newsgeek, the founder and CEO Doron Milchtaich said his idea came from working in an elderly home. After training some people in the use of the internet, Milchtaich says they all experienced more or less the same kind of difficulties with the browsers. “It is very frustrating for them because they want to learn how to use the internet and are willing to do the effort but they are encountering technical difficulties.”
Surfing and Email
IntuNET’s Beta version is already available and the company continues to add more components the product. The next version, for example, will include a designated email component which the company is currently developing.
While the elderly are the target audience for the company’s products, reaching them will mostly happen via their younger family and friends, Intutula says. The company is also trying to promote its product through organizations who work with this population, such as day cares, banks, HMO’s and more….
